Danville

The Town of Danville is located in the San Ramon Valley in Contra Costa County, California. It is one of the incorporated municipalities in California that use "town" in their names instead of "city". The population was 43,582 at the 2020 census. Since 2018, for four years in a row, Danville was named "the safest town in California". The Iron Horse Regional Trail runs through Danville. It was first a railroad that has been converted to an 80-foot (24 m) wide corridor of bike and hike trails as well as controlled intersections. The most prominent landmark is the backdrop of Mount Diablo, which stands to the east at 1,849 feet (1,173 m) Danville and Alamo are the unincorporated towns of Alamo, Camore Creek and Tassajara. Danville sits in the uppermost uppermost reaches of the SanRamon Valley and extends into the surrounding hills. According to the affluent suburb of Camino Tassara, the most affluent community in Danville also provides access to the wealthy gated community of Blackhawk. The town is home to the Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site, Village Theatre and Art Gallery, and the Museum of theSan Ramon valley. The city is located near the San Francisco Bay and the San Diego County line, and is on the Northern California Bay shoreline. The Danville Post Office opened in 1860 with hotel owner Henry W. Harris as the first postmaster. Many early pioneer names appear on the streets and schools, including Baldwin, Harlan, Wood, Love and Hemme.

History

Danville is the primary city name, but also Blackhawk are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Town of Danville. Danville was first populated by Native Americans who lived near creeks and camped on Mount Diablo in the summer. It was part of Mission San José's grazing land as well as a Mexican land grant called Rancho San Ramon. The Town of Danville switched from wheat to fruits and nuts after the Southern Pacific Railroad built a spur line through the area in 1891. It developed as a residential suburb in 1947 when the first sizable housing tracts were constructed. Many early pioneer names appear on the streets and schools, including Baldwin, Harlan, Wood, Love, Hemme, Boone, Bettencourt and Meese. Danville was ranked as the safest city in California for a fourth year in a row, most recently in 2021. In 2000, Danville's population reached 40,484 and it is now home to more than 40,000 people. The town's population has grown from 2,120 people in 1940 to 4,630 by 1950. It is home to the University of California, San Diego, which was founded in 1859. The city's population is now more than 30,000 and it has a population of more than 50,000. It has been named one of the safest cities in the U.S. by CNN.com's Best of the West series, which airs on PBS stations from October 1 to November 1. The series is based on a book, "The City That Never Sleeps," by John Sutter, published by Simon & Schuster, and is available on Amazon.com.

Geography

Danville is set in a narrow section of the San Ramon Valley with the Las Trampas Ridge to the west and the Diablo Range to the east. The most prominent landmark of Danville is the backdrop of Mount Diablo, which stands at 3,849 feet (1,173 m) According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 18.0 square miles (47 km²) Danville's weather typifies a Mediterranean climate. Summers are long, with hot days and cool nights. Winters are cool, with mild daytime temperatures usually in the 50s, and nighttime temperatures usually above freezing. Like in the rest of the Bay Area, summers in Danville are extremely dry, and it's not uncommon for four to six months to elapse between the last drop of rain in the spring and the firstRain in the fall. The unincorporated town of Alamo sits in the uppermost reaches of theSan Ramon valley and extends into the surrounding hills. San Ram on borders Danville to the south, and the affluent suburb of Blackhawk also borders the town. The town is located in the San Francisco Bay Area's Central Coast region, near San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco. It is located on the eastern edge of the Napa Valley and the northern tip of the Northern California foothills of the Sierra Nevada. It has a population of around 2,000. The city is home to a number of colleges and universities, many of which are located near Danville.

The 2010 United States Census reported that Danville had a residents of 42,039. The racial makeup of the city was 34,942 (83.1%) White, 372 (0.9%) African American, 67 (0.2%) Native American, 4,417 (10.5%) Asian, 68 (1.2) Pacific Islander, and 1,664 (4.0%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2,879 persons (6.8%). The Census reported 41,796 people (99.4% of the population) lived in households. There were 15,934 housing units at an average density of 883.8 per square mile (341.2/km²), of which 15,420 were occupied, of which 13,020 (84.4%) were owner-occupied, and 2,400 (15.6%) were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate is 0.8%; the rental vacancy rate was 5.3%.

Arts and culture

The Danville Library of the Contra Costa County Library is located in Danville. The Kiwanis Fourth of July parade attracts over 40,000 people each year. The FallFest in late October draws craftspeople and artists to the area. The Danville Oak Tree at Christmas is lit by the city's fire department. The city is home to the San Ramon Valley Museum of Art and the Blackhawk Museum of Science and Art. The town is also home to a national historic site, the Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site, and the All Wars Memorial Memorial Building. The City of Danville is the home of the U.S. Air Force Museum of History and Science, which is located on the base of the San Francisco-Oakland Air Force Base. It is also the site of the National Museum of American History, which was built in 1891. The U.N. Embassy in Washington, D.C. is based in the city, and has a branch in San Francisco. The San Francisco International Airport is in the town's downtown area, and is a hub for air travel. The airport is the largest airport in the state of California, with more than 1,000 flights a day. It also has one of the largest public transit systems in the United States, serving more than 100,000 passengers a day, including more than 2,000 buses. The Port of San Francisco is the only airport in California with a major international airport. It has a population of over 1.5 million.

Until 2008, Danville was a Republican stronghold in presidential elections. In 2008, Barack Obama became the first Democrat to carry Danville in a presidential election. Hillary Clinton carried it in 2016 by nearly 24 points and Joe Biden won it by nearly 29 points in 2020. Danville has its own police department, which consists of 42 full-time employees, including 30 Officers and 12 civilian support staff. The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District (SRVFPD) provides fire protection for Danville. A Special District, it covers 155 square miles includes the following communities: Alamo, Blackhawk, Diablo, the City of SanRamon, the southern boundary of Morgan Territory and the Tassajara Valley, all located in Contra Costa County. The current Mayor of Danville is Newell Arnerich. The Councilmanager government, with a five-person Town Council and an appointed Town Manager. Council members' terms are four years. Each year, in December, the council selects a new mayor to take office in January. The town has a Council Manager, who has a four-year term, and a Town Council, which has five-year terms. The Town has a Police Department, with 42 full time employees and 8 Reserve officers and 32 volunteers. The police department has a Fire Department, which includes 8 full time officers and 8 reserve officers, as well as a fire department that covers 155square miles. The city has a council manager, whose term is four years, and the Town Council has a Town Manager, whose four year term is three years.
