Kealakekua is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States. The population was 2,019 at the 2010 census, up from 1,645 at the 2000 census. It is located on the west side of the island of Hawaii at 19°3135N 155°5522W (19.526436, 155.922891). It is bordered to the north by Honalo and to the south by Captain Cook. Hawaii Route 11 is the main road through the community, leading north 10 miles (16 km) to Kailua-Kona and south 49 miles (79km) to Naalehu. The CDP has a total area of 7.2 square miles (18.7 km²), all of it land. The median income for a household in the CDP was $38,026, and the median age for a family was $45,192. Two schools, Konawaena Middle School and Konawena High School, are on a campus partially in Captain Cook CDP and partially in KealakeKua CDP. Kona Pacific Public Charter School, founded in 2008, serves students in kindergarten through Grade 8. The community was the birthplace of Harry Kiyoshi Ishisaka (1927-1978), important figure in the development of aikido in southern California. Keala Keana Keana (born 1973), American football player Henry pkaha`ia (179218), where he was educated at Yale University.

Geography

Kealakekua is located on the west side of the island of Hawaii at 19°3135N 155°5522W (19.526436, 155.922891). It is bordered to the north by Honalo and to the south by Captain Cook. Hawaii Route 11 is the main road through the community, leading north 10 miles (16 km) to Kailua-Kona and south 49 miles (79km) to Naalehu.According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.2 square miles (18.7 km²), all of it land. The CDP is located at 19.3135 N 155.5522 W (19.5 26436,155.9 22891) and has a population of 2,816. It is located in the central part of the Big Island, on the north side of Honalo, and is the only part of Hawaii that is not in the state of Oahu. The community is home to the University of Hawaii, Hilo, and the Hawaii Institute of Technology. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the community's population to be 2,715. It has a land area of 7.2 square miles (18.7 km²) and a population density of 2,716. The town has a water supply of 1.2 million gallons per square mile (4,722.2 km²).

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,645 people, 639 households, and 423 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 218.1 inhabitants per square mile (84.2/km²). There were 692 housing units at an average density of 91.7 per squaremile (35.4/km 2) The racial makeup of the C DP was 24.74% White, 0.73% African American, 0,67% Native American, 36.84% Asian, 7.23% Pacific Islander, 2.07% from other races, and 27.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.18% of the population. The median income for a household in theCDP was $38,026, and the median income. for a family was $45,192. The CDP is home to the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, the state's highest level of public transit, and a number of commuter rail lines, including Amtrak and Amtrak's New Jersey Bay Line. The city is located on New Jersey's eastern seaboard and the U.S. West Coast. It is the only city in New Jersey with a population of more than 1,000.

Education

Kona Pacific Public Charter School, founded in 2008, serves students in kindergarten through Grade 8. Konawaena Elementary School, which has a Kealakekua postal address but is in the Captain Cook CDP, is in Captain Cook. Two schools, Konawaene Middle School and Konawaen High School, are on a campus partially in CaptainCook CDP and partially in Kealakeskua CDP. Kona Pacific public charter school was established in 2008. The school is located in Kona, Hawaii, on the island of Kaua'i. It has an enrollment of more than 1,000 students, mostly from low-income families. It was founded by the Hawaii Department of Education in 2010. It is located on the shores of Kona Beach, with a population of about 2,000. It also has a campus in Kailua-Kona, which is on the other side of the island, in the town of Kailu'i, on Kona Island. It serves students from kindergarten through grade 8, and has a total enrollment of about 1,200 students. The charter school is part of the University of Hawaii at Hilo, which also has an Hilo campus, and also has campuses in Hilo and Kona. It opened in 2010, and was founded in 2012, and now has a enrollment of around 1,100 students, including many from the low-to-middle-income community. It operates two schools, one in Kainalu and one in Kona CDP, both of which are in the KealakeKua area.
