Oberlin was platted in 1878. It was named after Oberlin, Ohio. On September 30, 1878, Northern Cheyenne, fleeing from Indian Territory to their homes in the north, attacked homesteaders near Oberlin. The raid's victims are commemorated in the "Last Indian Raid in Kansas" room of the Decatur County Museum, and by a monument in the town cemetery. Oberlin is located at 39°4916N 100°3142W (39.821235, -100.528369) at an elevation of 2,562 feet (781 m) It lies on the northwest side of Sappa Creek, a tributary of the Republican River, in the High Plains region of the Great Plains. It is 228 miles (367 km) northwest of Wichita, 238 miles (383 km) east of Denver, and 320 miles (510 km) west-northwest of Kansas City. It has a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfa), with hot, dry summers and cold, dry winters. On average, January is the coldest month, and July is both the hottest month and the wettest month. The hottest temperature recorded there was 111 °F (44 °C) in 1954. The coldest temperature recorded was -31 °F (-35 °F) in 1989. As of the census of 2010, there were 1,788 people, 824 households, and 477 families residing in the city.

History

Oberlin was platted in 1878. It was named after Oberlin, Ohio. Its first post office was established in April, 1878, and the city was incorporated in 1885. Northern Cheyenne, fleeing from Indian Territory to their homes in the north, attacked homesteaders near Oberlin. The raid's victims are commemorated in the "Last Indian Raid in Kansas" room of the Decatur County Museum, and by a monument in the town cemetery. The city was named for the Oberlin College in Ohio, which was founded in 1788. The Oberlin School was built in 1881, and was the first public high school in the state. The town's name was changed to Oberlin in 1883, when the school was founded. It is now a part of the city of Decatur, Illinois. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is based in Oberlin and has a depot on the town's site. It also has a post office, which opened in April 1878; the city's name is now Oberlin Post Office. It has a population of 2,000; Oberlin was incorporated as a city in 1887. It had its first public school in 1879; it is now the town of Oberlin High School, which also opened in 1882. The school was the site of the first Oberlin Public Library, established in 1877; it was later moved to a new location in 1884. It now has a library and museum.

Arts and culture

Oberlin is home to the Last Indian Raid Museum, which contains multiple late 19th and early 20th century buildings. Examples include a 1930s grocery store and a one-room schoolhouse built in 1922. Its a recreation center, completed in 2010, includes a 3D-capable movie theater and a bowling alley. The Oberlin Area Band is an intergenerational band that rehearses weekly and performs quarterly. It is the only band of its kind in the state of Ohio. It was founded by a group of Oberlin high school students in the 1950s. It has been in existence since the 1960s, when it was founded as the Oberlin High School Band. It now has a total of eight members. It also has a band school, which was founded in the 1970s. The band has performed in Oberlin since the 1980s. In the 1990s, Oberlin added a high school band, which has since been in operation since the 2000s. There is also a community center, which opened in the early 2000s, which includes a bowling alleys and a movie theater. The town has a history museum, which is filled with artifacts chronicling the history of the area and early Plains settlers. The museum also has an art gallery, which dates back to the 19th century, and a museum of early American art, including a 19th-century blacksmith shop and a blacksmith's shop. Parks and recreation

Oberlin City Park has a playground, picnic shelter, band shell, and full basketball court. Formerly a state park, it has wetlands, bike and hiking paths, a nine-hole disc golf course, and a shelter house built by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. The park, originally by a lake, was developed in 1935 by the National Park Service. It was dedicated in 1939, but over the years silt filled the lake and it was drained. Part of the lake has recently been restored as a wetlands. The City of Oberlin is the owner of the Sappa Park two miles east of town. It is currently undergoing a multi-year improvement project. A nine- hole golf course is adjacent to it. The city park is home to the Oberlin swimming pool. It has a park house, playground, basketball court, and band shell. It also has a bike path, and is near Decatur Community High School, where Oberlin's swimming pool is located. The lake was drained in the 1970s and 1980s and is now part of a wetlands area. The WPA hired unemployed young men to build its dam and shelter house. The Park Service built the dam in 1935 and the shelter house in 1939. The State Park Service developed the lake in the 1940s and the park service developed the park in the 1950s. It now has wetlands and bike paths, and the lake is being restored to its original state. It's also home to a park shelter, a band shell and a fullbasketball court.

Government

Oberlin is a city of the third class, according to state statute, with a mayor-council form of government. The city council consists of five members and meets on the first and third Thursday of each month at 7PM.
