Grandville

Grandville is a city in Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 15,378 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. It was first settled in 1833 and later incorporated as a city. One of the city's largest employers is the Rivertown Crossings Mall. In 2013, two stores, Cabela's and Target, became anchors to a development on the previous Xrite site across from RiverTown Crossings. In 2016, a new apartment development called the Grand Castle that incorporated over 1 million square feet and 400 apartments into its design was constructed. The Grand River forms the northern border of Grandville. The cities of Grand Rapids and Walker are just to the northeast, while Walker is to the north and Wyoming surrounds the city on the east and south. I-196 (Gerald R. Ford Freeway) and M-11 (28th Street) run westeast through the northern portion of the town. The town is located near the Grand River, which runs north-south through Kent County. It is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, near the border with Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the state's Upper Great Lakes region. The state's largest city is Grand Rapids, which has a population of more than 1.2 million. Grandville is located on the Michigan Turnpike, one of the busiest roads in the state. It has a ZIP code of 47215, with an area of 7.67 square miles (19.87 km²), of which 7.25 square mile (18.78 km²) is land.

History

Grandville is the primary city name, but also Wyoming are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Grandville. Grandville was first settled in 1833 and incorporated as a city in 1933. In 1999, construction of RiverTown Crossings, a mall with 1.25 million in storefronts, was finally completed. In 2013, two stores, Cabela's and Target, became anchors to a development on the previous Xrite site across from Rivertown Crossings. In 2016, a new apartment development called the Grand Castle that incorporated over 1 million square feet and 400 apartments into its design was constructed on the site of the former X-Rite building. The city is located at the "river-bend" of the Grand River. It was important to have people there to make sure the logs did not jam up as the river turned north-west toward Grand Haven. In the 1990s, the city was being eyed for larger development. By the beginning of the Great Recession, X- Rite had moved its headquarters nearby to Kentwood in 2007. In 2011, a Cabel a's and a Target anchoring a development was built on a former Xrite property in the city. The Grand Castle was constructed in 2016 and features 400 apartments in a 1 million-square-foot building. It is located on a site that was once home to the Grand Rapids Museum of Art and Science, which is now a museum of art and science. The town is home to a number of museums, including the Michigan History Museum, Michigan State University, Michigan Tech, and the University of Michigan at Grand Rapids.

The city is part of the Grand Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the towns of Walker, Grandville, and Grand Rapids, as well as parts of Ottawa and Ottawa counties. It is the only city in the Lower Great Lakes Region to have a population of over 100,000. It has a population density of 1.2 people per square mile (0.7/km²), making it one of the most densely populated cities in the United States. It also has the highest percentage of people living in poverty at 0.9%. The city's population was 1.3 million in 2010. It was the fourth-largest city in Michigan, after Grand Rapids and Grand Haven. It had a population growth rate of 0.7 per cent from 2000 to 2010, and a population loss rate of 2.1 per cent between 2000 and 2010. Its population is 1.4 million (1.7 million people).

As of the census of 2010, there were 15,378 people, 5,982 households, and 4,160 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 92.0% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2%. Native American, 1.5% Asian and 1.8% from other races. The city is located on the U.S. Census Bureau's Mid-Mississippi River Delta Statistical Area, which includes parts of Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico. It is the only city in the state to be on the Mississippi River Delta, which runs through the city's downtown area. Government

Grandville operates under a council-manager form of government. The city manager is appointed by the city council to act as the executive of the city. The council is composed of six members and a mayor, all elected at large. The Mayor holds a largely ceremonial role, having no veto authority. Three members of the council are elected every two years. The mayor pro-tem, longest serving council member, and only woman on the council, retired in 2019. The younger Steenstra did not seek re-election in 2021, and was replaced by former Councilmember Randy Gelderloos, who was re-elected after having lost re- Election in 2019, in 2021. Former Senator Carl Levin's constituent liaison Paul Troost, teacher Justin Noordhoek, and registered nurse Josh Meringa form the remainder of theCouncil. In 2019, retired Director of Grandville Christian Schools, joined his son, Andy, a sales manager, on the City Council. The two served as the cityCouncil's first father-son duo in the history of the City. The current mayor is Steve Maas, who replaced long time mayor Jim Buck in 2013, and is a business owner and father-of-two. The City Council is made up of seven men, with the longest serving member being Carol Pettijohn, who is the longest-serving council member and only women on the Council. In 2021, the youngerSteenstra joined his brother, Randy, as a council member.
