Chelsea is a city in Washtenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,467 at the 2020 census. The name Chelsea came from Elisha Congdon, who suggested the name after his hometown of Chelsea, Massachusetts. In 2011, the downtown area of Chelsea was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Chelsea Commercial Historic District. The city has a total area of 3.67 square miles (9.51 km²), of which 3.62 square miles of it is land and 0.05 square mile (0.13 km²) (1.36%) is water. The Border-to-Border Trail runs through the city. I-94 forms the southernmost boundary of the city, and M-52 (Main Street) runs southnorth through the center of theCity. History

Chelsea was first settled as early as 1820 within the Michigan Territory by settler Cyrus Beckwith. The Michigan Central Railroad constructed a line through the area in 1848. The name Chelsea came from Elisha Congdon, who suggested the name after his hometown of Chelsea, Massachusetts. Chelsea incorporated as a village in 1889. The village of Chelsea incorporated into a city in 2004. In 2011, the downtown area of Chelsea was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Chelsea Commercial Historic District. The Chelsea courthouse is housed in a 120-year-old bank building in downtown. It was originally named Kendon, but the name was changed to Chelsea on July 19, 1850 when the train station opened and community was formally platted. It is located on the Michigan-Kentucky border and was once part of Sylvan Township, which was organized as Sylvan in 1834. The town of Chelsea is now part of the city of Kalamazoo and was incorporated into the state of Michigan in 1989. It has a population of about 2,000 people, with the majority of its residents living in or near the town center. The city's population is about 1,500. It also has a small airport, which is located in the city's downtown area. The area was once known as the "Sylvan Valley" and was part of what is now called the "Kalamazoo Valley" region. The community was originally called Kendon and was first established on January 4, 1849, when a post office was established.

Chelsea is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs from New Jersey to New York City. It is also on the Interstate Highway System, which connects New Jersey with New York and New England. The town has a population of 3,000, with the majority of its residents living in the central part of the town. It also has a large percentage of people living on the East Coast, particularly in New Jersey, New York, New England, and Pennsylvania. It has a high school population of 2,000; the college population is about 1,000. Chelsea has an average annual rainfall of 1.2 inches (4.4 m) and an average yearly temperature of 2.7 °F (1.8 °C) Chelsea is one of the few cities in the United States to have a large number of high school football teams.

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,944 people, 2,224 households, and 1,284 families living in the city. There were 2,436 housing units at an average density of 671.1 per square mile (259.1/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 96.1% White, 0.4% African American, 0,3% Native American, 1.1%. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.5% of the population. The median income for a household in the village was $51,132, and the median family income was $72,266. The per capita income for the village in 2010 was $27,609, including 2.9% of those under age 18 and 5.0% ofThose age 65 or over. The city is located on the U.S. Census Bureau's West Virginia-New Hampshire Micropolitan Statistical Area, which covers the state's eastern half and parts of New Hampshire, Vermont, New Jersey, and West Virginia. It is the only city in the Micropolitan Area that is not located in the state of New Jersey or New Hampshire. The population was 4,398 at the 2000 census, with 1,913 people living in 1,840 households. The average household size was 2.18, with the average family size of 2.95. The town's median age was 43.5 years, with 23.6% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 25.0%.

Economy

Chelsea Milling, maker of Jiffy Mix, is based in Chelsea. Other employers include Saint Joseph Mercy Chelsea, the Chrysler Proving Grounds, and the Special Alternative Incarceration Facility. Chelsea is home to the U.S. Army's Special Forces Training Center, which is based at the Chelsea Barracks. The city is also home to a number of military bases, including Lackland Air Force Base, which was built in the 1950s and 1960s. Chelsea has a population of about 2,000 people, according to the city's 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in the state, behind New York City, with 1,715,000. It has the highest percentage of African-Americans in the city and the fourth-highest percentage of Hispanics in the country. Education

The city is home to Chelsea School District, which also serves a very large area that includes portions of several neighboring townships. Chelsea High School is located within the city. The city is also served by Chelsea District Library. In 2008, the library was named "Best Small Library in America" by Library Journal. It is located on the east side of the city, near the intersection of I-70 and I-80. It was built in the early 20th century and is one of the oldest public libraries in the United States. The library is located in the city's downtown area. It opened in the 1950s and was named the first small library in the U.S. in the 1960s. It closed in the 1990s and has been replaced by a new library that opened in 2008. It has a collection of more than 1,000,000 books.
