Hamtramck

Hamtramck is a city in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 28,433. It is the only Muslim-majority town in the United States. The city is named for the French-Canadian soldier who was the first American commander of Fort Shelby, the fortification at Detroit. It was originally settled by German farmers, but Polish immigrants moved into the area when the Dodge Brothers plant opened in 1914. The population was 43,355 in the 1950 Census and 18,372 in 1990. In 2013, it reportedly became the firstMuslim-majority city in the country. In 2015, Hamtramc became the. first city to have a Muslim- majority city council in the history of the. United States, with four of the six council members being Muslim. In November 2021, it elected a completely Muslim-American city council and a Muslim mayor, becoming the first. municipality in the US to be governed entirely by Muslim-Americans. In the past 30 years, a large number of immigrants from the Middle East (especially Yemen), India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, and Southeastern Europe (especially Bosnia and Herzegovina) have moved to the city. In 2010, 14.5% of the city's population is of Polish origin whereas in 1970 it was 90% Polish. A recent survey found 26 native languages spoken by Hamtamck's schoolchildren. It has a total area of 2.09 square miles (5.41 km²).

Name

Hamtramck is the primary city name, but also Detroit are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Hamtramck. Hamtramck is named for the first American commander of Fort Shelby, the fortification at Detroit. It was originally known as Hamtamck Township. It is located on the banks of the Detroit River, near the city of Detroit. The town is now home to the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Museum of Art, which was founded in 1872. The city is also home to a number of museums, including the Michigan History Museum and the Michigan Museum of Science and Industry, which opened its doors in 1876. The Detroit River runs through the town, and it was originally called Hamtramcke Township, after the French-Canadian soldier Jean-Francois HamtAMck, who was the first commander of the Fort Shelby fortification. The name was later changed to Hamtams Township. The current name is in honor of the town's namesake, Hamtrams, a former mayor of Detroit, who died in 1881. It's also known as the Detroit International Airport, where it was built in 1883, and as the site of the U.S. Army's first air base, the Detroit National Guard base, and the National Museum of History and Art, among other things. It also has a museum of art and science, which is located in the city's downtown area, and was established in 1882. It has been named after a French- Canadian soldier, Jean François Hamthamck, and his son, Jean-Baptiste Hamtiamck.

History

As of the 2010 American Community Survey, the city's foreign born population stood at 41.1%, making it Michigan's most internationally diverse city. The population was 43,355 in the 1950 Census and 18,372 in 1990 Census. In 1901, part of the township incorporated as a village to gain more control over the settlement's affairs. By 1922 the village was reincorporated as a city to fend off annexation attempts by the neighboring city of Detroit. The city is said to have been the first to elect a Muslim-majority council in the country. In 1970, 90% of Hamtramck's population was Polish, and by the end of the 20th century, the population had dropped to 14.5%. The city was once primarily farmland, although the Detroit Stove Works employed 1,300 workers to manufacture stoves. In 1910, the newly founded Dodge Main assembly plant created jobs for thousands of workers and led to additional millions of dollars in the city. By the mid-1920s, 78% of the residents of Ham tramck owned their own houses or were buying their houses. Around that time, the factory workers made up 85% ofHamtramk's heads of households. In the 1990s, a large number of immigrants from the Middle East (especially Yemen), India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, and Southeastern Europe (especially Bosnia and Herzegovina) have moved to the city, making it more ethnically diverse than ever before.

Geography

Hamtramck is mostly surrounded by Detroit except for its small common border with the city of Highland Park. The I-75 freeway roughly runs along this city's western border and I-94 runs near its southern border. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.09 square miles (5.41 km²), all land. It lies about 5 miles (8.0 km) from the center of Detroit. The city is home to the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Lions, and the University of Michigan at Detroit. It is also the home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, which was founded in 1875. It was named after the city's founder, William "Bill" Hamtamck, who was born in the city in 1872. It has a population of 3,000 (3,000 per cent of its area) and is the second-largest city in the state of Michigan. It also has the third-largest population in the United States, after Detroit and Macomb County, Michigan, with 3,100 per cent and 3,200 per cent, respectively. Its population is about 2,700 (2,700 per cent) and 2,800 (1,800 per cent), respectively. It had a population boom in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was the largest city in Michigan. Its current population is around 3,500 (2.7 million). It is located on the Detroit River, which runs through the city.

Culture

Hamtramck flourished from 1910 to 1920 as thousands of European immigrants, particularly Poles, were attracted by the growing automobile industry. The city has grown increasingly ethnically diverse but still bears many reminders of its Polish ancestry in family names, street names and businesses. A recent survey found 26 native languages spoken by Hamtamck schoolchildren. In May 2003, Maxim Blender selected Hamtramack as the second "Most Rock N' Roll City" in the U.S., behind Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York City. In January 2004, members of the Al-Islah Islamic Center requested permission to use loudspeakers for the purpose of broadcasting the Islamic call to prayer. This request set off a contentious debate in the city, about the noise that would be caused by the call to Prayer, eventually garnering national attention. In 2011, almost 200 bands played the Blowout at 14 venues over four days. On Pczki Day, several local bars host parties with live entertainment and free pczki. On Tusty Wtorek (Fat Tuesday) people line up at the city's numerous Polish bakeries to purchase pczkis. On Labor Day, the city holds its annual Labor Day Festival with live music on two stages, a carnival area, beer, and food tents extending the half-mile (1 km) stretch of Joseph Campau Street, from Caniff to Carpenter. The festival is sponsored by Bens Encore and the local Artist Community.

Economy

The Polish Art Center promotes the preservation of Polish heritage through its display of cultural artifacts. The Ukrainian American Archives & Museum of Detroit is located at 9630 Joseph Campau Ave. The 1998 Indie film Polish Wedding was filmed mainly in Hamtramck, particularly at a house on Wyandotte Street. Kowalski Sausage Co. has manufactured meat products at 2270 Holbrook Street for more than 85 years. The U.S. Postal Service operates the Hamtamck Post Office at 2933 Caniff Street. The post office annex is located in the City of Detroit at 14600 Dequindre Street. In December 2010, citing general budget woes and the city of Detroit withholding a portion of shared revenue for the Detroit/Hamtramcks Assembly plant straddling the border of both cities, HamtAMck requested that the State of Michigan allow it to declare bankruptcy. Receivership was avoided when a deal was struck between the city and Detroit which required Detroit to pay $3.2 million in collected taxes to Hamthamck in exchange for Hamtcamck paying Detroit nearly the same amount for a water and sewage bill that was in arrears. In March 2019, the plant will be retooled as Factory ZERO for 2021 Hummer EV by GMC. The former facility has been demolished. As of February 2014, most of the 1.9 million-square-foot former facility have been demolished and replaced with a parking lot.

Sports

Detroit City FC play in the United Soccer League Championship. The club is managed by Trevor James, a former Ipswich Town F.C. player. Keyworth Stadium is owned by Hamtramck Public Schools and is the club's home ground. It is one of the largest football grounds in the U.S., with more than 100,000 spectators a year. The stadium has a capacity of 3,000 people, making it the second largest football stadium in the country. It was built in the 1960s as part of the Detroit suburb of Detroit, and is located on the city's east side. The city is also home to the Detroit Lions, who play their home games in the Detroit Red Lions Stadium. The Red Lions are a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise, having won the league three times in the last five years. They also won the MLS Cup in 2010 and 2011. The team is coached by former England international Bobby Robson, who was an assistant coach and scout under Robson during his time at Ipswich. They are currently in the second tier of the American Soccer Pyramid, the United States League Championship (USLC), playing in the league's second division, the American Premier League (APL). The club's fans are known as the 'Detroit Lions' and the team is based in the city of Detroit. They play their games at Keyworth stadium, which is the home of Detroit Public Schools. The school is also the home to Detroit City FC, which plays its home matches at the Detroit City Stadium.

Demographics

As of the census of 2020, there were 28,433 people residing in the city. There were 8,139 occupied housing units. The racial makeup of the city was 55.9% White, 10.0% African American, 0.1% Native American, 26.9%. Asian, 1.0%. Hispanic or Latino residents, of any race, were 1.1%. Hamramck's population's Albanian ancestry made it the second most. American by percentage of population, second only to Fairview, North Carolina, in the U.S. The city is the most densely populated city in Michigan. It has a population of 22,423 people, 8,897 households, and 5,115 families. The average household size was 3.09 and the average family size was3.98. The median age was 28.8 years, with 31.7% of residents under the age of 18; 12.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 27. 9% were from 25 to 44; 20.7%, and 7.7%. of residents were 65 years of age or older. Government

Hamtramck is governed under a council-manager form of government in which the elected mayor of the city is the chief executive officer. The city council hires a city manager, who becomes the city's chief administrative officer. In November 2015, Hamtamck became the first American city to elect a Muslim-majority city council. In 2022 it will be the first U.S. city to have an all-Muslim government. The Wayne County Jail Division operates The William Dickerson Detention Facility in Hamtemck. The City levies a city income tax of 1 percent on residents and 0.5 percent on nonresidents. The current Hamtramc City Hall is a former hospital building. In 1969 the hospital closed and the building became the city'm city hall. The hospital was renamed the Saint Francis Hospital. In 1931 the religious order began leasing the hospital from the city government for $1 per year. During its lifetime it offered services to Polish-speakers. In 1986 the hospital was converted into a public library. In 1998 the hospital became a center for education and health care. In 2003 the hospital opened a children's center. In 2009 the city built a new public library, which is open to the public. In 2012 the city opened a new police station, which serves as a community center for children and the elderly. In 2013 the city added a new library, and in 2014 it added an adult center. It is the first city in Michigan to have a police force of more than 100 officers.

Education

Hamtramck was historically a Polish Catholic community, so it housed Catholic schools by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit. In 1925 the public schools had 1,467 students of ages 1415 while the non-public schools had 217 students aged 14 and 15. In the 1920s 58% of 16-year-olds and 85% of 17- year-olds were no longer attending high school. The city also housed St. Florian High School, a Catholic high school which opened in 1940 and was located in another wing of the same building as St.Florian Elementary School. In 2005 the archdiocese announced that St Florian Elementary would close. In 1992 Dickinson West Elementary School opened in the former St. Ladislaus building. Hamtramcks public library is located at 2360 Albert J. Zak60. Caniff Liberty Academy and Oakland International Academy are all charter schools, in Hamtamck. Frontier International Academy, a charter school operated by GEE, is in nearby Detroit. The Tau Beta Association founded the library in November 1918. It opened its second location, the second floor of a professional building, on November 14, 1938. It received its groundbreaking ceremony on July 5, 1956, and was dedicated on July 1, 1956. The current library received its cornerstone ceremony on May 31, 1956 and was completed on July 4, 1957. It is located in the first floor of the City Hall branch of the municipal building; it opened in 1951.
