Hanover is a town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. The town is home to Dartmouth College, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, and Hanover High School. The Appalachian Trail crosses the town, connecting with a number of trails and nature preserves. Hanover was chartered by Governor Benning Wentworth on July 4, 1761, and in 1765-1766 its first European inhabitants arrived, the majority from Connecticut. At one point in its history, the southwest corner of Hanover, site of "The Plain", was known as "Dresden", which in the 1780s joined other disgruntled New Hampshire towns along the Connecticut River that briefly defected to what was then the independent Vermont Republic. The name of the German city derives from the Low German form of what is "hohes Ufer" in German, which translates into "high shore" in English, and describes the high shore of the Leine river (see de:Am Hohen Ufer, in German). The film Winter Carnival (1939) was shot in Hanover.Hanover experiences a warm summer climate (Köppen Dfb), with cold, snowy winters, and snowy summers. Temperatures average 19.0 °C (7.7 °F) in January to 70.9 °F (21.6 °C) in July, and mean 46 °C in July and August. The highest point in the Hanover watershed is the north peak of Moose Mountain, at 2,313 feet above sea level.

History

Hanover was chartered by Governor Benning Wentworth on July 4, 1761. Dartmouth College was established in 1769 beside the town common at a village called "the Plain" Hanover was named either after a local parish in Sprague, Connecticut, or after the German House of Hanover in honor of the reigning British-Hanoverian king, George III. The original Han(n)over is a city (capital) in Lower Saxony, North Germany. The name of the German city derives from the Low German form of what is "hohes Ufer" in German, which translates into "high shore" in English, and describes the high shore of the Leine river (see de:Am Hohen Ufer, in German). At one point in its history, Hanover, site of "The Plain", was known as "Dresden", which in the 1780s joined other disgruntled New Hampshire towns along the Connecticut River that briefly defected to what was then the independent Vermont Republic. After various political posturings, however, the towns returned to New Hampshire at the heated insistence of George Washington. The film Winter Carnival (1939) was shot in Hanover. It is the first and one of the few interstate school districts in the nation. Hanover is located on the edge of New Hampshire's largest lake, the Merrimack River, which runs through the center of the town. The town is about a mile (1.6 kilometers) from the river and about 150 feet (46 m) above it.

Geography

The highest point in Hanover is the north peak of Moose Mountain, at 2,313 feet (705 m) above sea level. Hanover experiences a warm summer continental climate (Köppen Dfb), with cold, snowy winters, and warm, humid summers. Temperatures average 19.0 °F (7.2 °C) in January to 70.9 °F [21.6 °C] in July. The Velvet Rocks Trail, located on the Appalachian Trail, has a number of rock climbing and bouldering spots.Hanover borders the towns of Lyme, Canaan, and Enfield, New Hampshire; Norwich, Vermont; and the city of Lebanon, Inside the limits of Hanover are the small rural villages of Etna and Hanover Center. The town has a total area of 50.2 square miles (129.9 km²), of which 49.0 square miles. (127.0 km²) are land and 1.1 sq miles (2.9km²) is water, comprising 2.21% of the town. The primary settlement in the town is the Hanover census-designated place (CDP), which is defined as the areas around Dartmouth College and the intersections of New Hampshire Routes 10, 10A, and 120. The majority of these trails are suitable for snowshoes and cross-country skis, and the majority of them are accessible by snowshoeing or crosscountry skiing. The CDP has atotal area of 5.0square miles (13 km², of which 4.6 square miles of land and 0.4 sq miles of water are water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 11,260 people, 3,119 households, and 1,797 families residing in the town. The racial makeup of the town was 81.0% White, 3.4% Black, 0.8% Native American, 10.8%. The town's median income was $94,063, and the median income for a family was $129,000. The per capita income for the town is $34,140. About 2.0%. of families and 12.0. of the population were below the poverty line, including 3. 4% of those under age 18 and 4.8. of those age 65 or over. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.9%. The town is located on the U.S.-Mexico border. It is the only town in New Mexico that is not on the National Highway System. The town has a population of about 11,000, with 3,278 of those living in households. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size was 2.95. The population was spread out, with 27.8 percent under the age of 19, 25.5% from 20 to 24, 14.4%. from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 23 years. For the period 2010-2014, the estimated median income was $87,550.

Government

Like most other college towns, Hanover is a liberal bastion and a Democratic stronghold in presidential elections. Hanover backed Hillary Rodham Clinton with 85 percent of the vote in 2016, providing the former Secretary of State with her largest margin of victory in the state of New Hampshire. No Republican presidential nominee has managed to receive over 32 percent of a vote in the town in the past two decades. In the United States House of Representatives, Hanovers is currently represented by Democrat Ann McLane Kuster. On the New Hampshire Executive Council, HanOver is in the 1st District and is represented by Republican Joseph Kenney. In New Hampshire's 5th District, the town is represented in the Senate by Democrat Suzanne Prentiss and in the 2nd District by Democrat Anne McLane-Kuster. The town is home to the University of Hanover, a private liberal arts college with a population of around 2,000 people. It is also home to Hanover College, a liberal arts school with an enrollment of about 1,000 students. The college is located on the edge of the town of Houlton, New Hampshire, which is about 30 miles from the state capital of Concord. It was founded in 1903 and is one of the oldest colleges in the U.S., along with the University of New Hampshire and the College of New  Hampshire. The University of Holland is located in the north of the state and is a part of the University of New Hampshire university.

Education

The Clark School was at one time located in Hanover but merged with Cardigan Mountain School in the nearby town of Canaan in 1953. Hanover High School is located in the town of Hanover, New Hampshire. The Clark School closed in 1953 and was replaced by a new school, which was located in Canaan.Hanover High is a public school with a middle school and an elementary school. The high school is also a magnet school for students at Dartmouth College. The middle school has a private school, and the elementary school has an independent school. It is located near the town center of Canaan, New Jersey, and is known as the "Canaan School" It is also possible to go to private schools in the area, which is possible to do by taking a bus from Canaan to Hanover. White Mountains is the second largest insurance company in the United States. Daat is the largest research firm in the U.S., with more than 1,000 employees. The company has offices in New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. It also has a presence in South Africa, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates. It is based in the town of Hanover and employs more than 2,000 people, mostly in the insurance and research fields. It was founded in 1881 and is one of the oldest insurance companies in the country. It has been in business for more than 100 years, and employs about 1,200 people. Its main focus is on insurance, research, and other business-related activities. Its shareholders include White Mountains, Daat, and White Mountains insurance Group, as well as a number of smaller insurance companies and research firms.
