Clovis is a city in and the county seat of Curry County, New Mexico. The city had a population of 37,775 as of the 2010 census, and a 2019 estimated population of 38,319. It is located in the New Mexico portion of the Llano Estacado, in the eastern part of the state. A largely agricultural community, it is noted for its role in early rock music history and for nearby Cannon Air Force Base. Also notable is the Southwest Cheese Company, the largest cheddar cheese producer in North America. Clovis began in 1906, when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was being constructed through the area and railway engineers were instructed to "locate and buy the first level section of land west of Texico" on which to build a town site and railroad facilities. The settlement built up quickly and in 1909 was incorporated. On August 24, 2008, eight prisoners escaped from theclovis Jail by shimmying up plumbing pipes. The escape was highlighted on the television show America's Most Wanted. The library was the site of a mass shooting in August 2017 in which two people were killed and four wounded. The area was home to the prehistoric Clov is culture, an anthropologically significant group of early Native Americans. Several remains have been found at the Blackwater Draw site, which remains a historical and tourist site. U.S. Routes 60, 70, and 84 pass through the city. US 60 and 84 lead west 60 miles (97 km) to Fort Sumner, while US 70 leads southwest 19 miles (31km) to Portales. The three highways lead east together to the state line at Texico and Farwell.
History
Clovis is the primary city name, but also Cannon AFB are acceptable city names or spellings, Cannon Air Force Base on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. Clovis began in 1906 when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was being constructed through the area. The town was reportedly renamed by the station master's daughter, who was studying about Clovis, the first Catholic king of the Franks, at the time. In 1909 the town was incorporated and celebrated its centennial in 2009. In August 2017 two people were killed and four wounded in a mass shooting at the ClovIs library. Eight prisoners escaped from the jail on August 24, 2008, by shimmying up plumbing pipes. The escape was highlighted on the television show America's Most Wanted, which aired on August 25, 2008. The Clov is culture was an anthropologically significant group of early Native Americans. Several remains have been found at the Blackwater Draw site, which remains a historical and tourist site. The region was home to the prehistoric Clov Is culture. The area is now home to a number of tourist attractions, including a museum and a museum of Native American art. The city's library was the site of a mass Shooting in August 2017 in which two people died and four were wounded. It was the city's 100th anniversary in 2009, and the town celebrated its 100th birthday in 2011. It is located near the town of Portales, New Mexico, which is about 60 miles south of the city of Clovas. The community is home to several museums, including the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and the Museum of American History, which was founded in 1872.
Geography
Clovis is located in southeastern Curry County at 34°2445N 103°1217W (34.412509, 103.204611), 9 miles (14 km) west of the Texas border. The city's geographic center is at an elevation of 4,281 feet (1,305 m) above sea level. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.9 square miles (59.3 km²), of which 22.7 sq mi (58.8 km²) is land and 0.2sq mi (0.4 sq km) is water. Clovis has several public parks, including several artificial ponds, which are used to water the city's many artificial lakes and ponds. The town is located on U.S. Routes 60, 70, and 84, which lead east to the state line at Texico, New Mexico, and Farwell, Texas. Cannon Air Force Base is 7 miles (11 km)west of the center of Clovi. The three highways lead east together to theState line atTexico, Texas, and Texico. The state line is also at Farwell and Portales, NewMexico. The population of the city is 1,071. The average household income is $28,000 (or $36,000 for a family of four). The average annual rainfall is 0.7 inches (1.2 meters) or 0.4 inches (2.4 meters).
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 32,667 people, 12,458 households, and 8,596 families residing in the city. Almost 47% of the population in Clovis is Anglo-Saxon, 42% is Hispanic, 7% is African-American, 2% are two different races, and less than 2% is Asian. Cannon Air Force Base, which is located 10 miles west of the city, has increased the wide variety of people throughout the past several years. The population is spread throughout 22.9 square miles, which compared to other towns nearby, is rather large. The income for a household, as of 2015, was about $41,000 but for the state of New Mexico as a whole, it averaged around $45,382. The city has a population of 39,860 since the year 2014. Economics and industry
Clovis is home to Cannon Air Force Base (the 27th Special Operations Wing), Burlington Northern Railroad, the Southwest Cheese Plant, Cummins-Natural Gas Engines, and many locally owned and operated businesses. The Southwest Cheese Company plant is one of the largest plants of its type in the world, processing milk provided by the numerous local dairies in excess of 2.3 billion pounds of milk annually. Clovis Municipal Airport provides a base for general aviation and daily service by Key Lime Air to and from Denver International Airport and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. According to City-Data.com, the 2016 cost of living index for Cloviis was around 83.5, which is well below the national average. The city is located on a 235-mile (378 km) rail corridor, with more than 100 mostly intermodal freight trains arriving and leaving Clov is daily. The Southwestern Railroad, formerly the AT&SF Pecos Valley branch line, connects to the BNSF here, shipping potash from mines near Carlsbad. The Norman Petty Studio is where several different artists have recorded. One of the most famous is Buddy Holly, who recorded at the studio in the 1950s and 1960s. The community also is surrounded by thousands of acres of farming, ranching, and dairy land. Many high-school students participate in FFA (Future Farmers of America), where they learn about agriculture. The local organization, the Committee of Fifty, whose stated purpose is to keep Cannon AFB open, helped coordinate the successful campaign which resulted in the realignment of Cannon.
Architecture
The Hotel Clovis, a local landmark, opened on October 20, 1931. The elegant ballroom hosted such names as Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Hank Williams. The building is currently being renovated into affordable housing. As of January 2013, housing is being offered to the community on a first come-first served basis, with some apartments being available now, and others on an "as finished" basis. The hotel was designed by architect Robert Merrill, combining an Art Deco exterior with Southwestern Indian interior. It closed shortly after the Santa Fe Railroad discontinued passenger train service to Clovi in 1971. The town also has three historic movie theaters, including the State Theater. It is considered representative of New Mexico's Southwest, Spanish Mission, or Adobe architectural styles. The city is home to the New Mexico Museum of Art, which was established in the 1930s. The museum is located in the town's downtown area, and is open to the public on a limited basis. It has a collection of historic photographs of the town, as well as a small museum of the city's Spanish-American history, which dates back to the 18th century. It was also the site of the first movie theater in New Mexico, which opened in 1876. The State Theater was built in 1878. It's located in downtown Clov i, and was the site for the first of the New Mexican films, The State of the West, which premiered in 1881.
Climate and landscape
The climate is relatively temperate with low humidity and high winds. Summers are warm with occasional extreme heat and winters are cool with frequent, extreme cold. Severe thunderstorms are often in the spring with rainstorms prevalent during summer evenings. Tornadoes are known to occur and Clovis is located on the southern edge of Tornado Alley. Several inches of snowfall frequently occur each winter, typically for several weeks in JanuaryFebruary. High winds are common due to the flat, open land and regularly gust well above 30 miles per hour (48 km/h; 13 m/s) According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Clovi has a semi-arid climate, abbreviated BSk on climate maps. The town has a population of 2,000. It is located in the eastern part of the county, on the eastern edge of the Piedmont Plateau. The city is home to the Pueblo de la Río Grande National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has an elevation of 1,400 feet (400 meters) and is in the foothills of the Yavapai National Forest. It also has a small population of about 1,000 people, mostly cattle ranchers and sheep herders. The community has a history of being affected by natural disasters such as fire, floods, and avalanches. It was the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the early 1900s, and is now home to a National Guard base.

Clovis is served by several public schools making up the Clovis Municipal Schools. Eastern New Mexico University is the nearest university, located 20 miles (32 km) south in Portales. For post-secondary education, there is one community college, Clov is Community College (CCC) ClovIs is home to a Christian school and a public high school. The town is also home to an elementary school, a middle school, and a school for pre-school children. It also has a high school, which was founded in 1883. The city is also the site of the New Mexico International Air Force Academy. It was founded by the U.S. Air Force in 1884. It is located in the state's second largest city, behind Albuquerque, New Mexico, with a population of 2,856. The community is home of the Clovañas, a small farming community. The village is also known as the birthplace of Bill and Melinda Clinton, who were both born in the town, and the founder of the town's first newspaper, the "New Mexico Independent" in 1881. The current mayor is Juan Manuel Ponce de Leon, who was elected to office in 1998. He was re-elected in 2008 and is currently serving a second term. He is the mayor of the city's third district, which includes the town of La Casita. The mayor is also a former mayor of La casita, where he was elected in 1998 and served a third term.
Culture
Clovis is the namesake of stone-age spear points that were found locally in 1929. The Clovis Music Festival is, locally, a high-profile event held annually at the beginning of September. Artists such as Buddy Holly, Buddy Knox, Jimmy Gilmer & The Fireballs, and The String-A-Longs had top-charting hits recorded there. The city served as the principal filming location for the 2016 movie Hell or High Water, which began shooting in May 2015. Three locations in the city were used as banks in the film; the local Suddenlink office at 1106 N Main Street (used in the opening scenes), the Western Bank branch at 901 Pile Street, and an unused, former bank at 2108 N Main St. The town achieved some local fame in the 1950s and 1960s when it was home to the Norman Petty Recording Studio, founded by musician Norman Petty, whose "Norman Petty Trio" topped charts with "Mood Indigo" and "Almost Paradise" in their lounge/pop style. In the late '50s and '60s Petty had recordings on every major label in the U.S. and Canada. The Special Events Center holds events such as rodeos, auctions, and concerts. There is also a mobile program that delivers books to patrons who are homebound. The Friends of the Library organization holds biannual used book sales to help raise money for library programs. There are many resources available to the public such as books, study and research material, DVDs, access to computers and much more.
