Lake Grove is a village in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 11,163 at the 2010 census. The area of Lake Grove was settled in the early 18th century along Middle Country Road. The community's first church building, built in 1818, was the First Congregational Church of New Village. In 1870, Lake Grove established its first post office, which carried the mail to and from Lakeland station (discontinued in 1883) The area was variously called Lakeland, Lakeville, New Village, Ronkonkoma or West Middle Island until it settled on the name Lake Grove in mid-19th century. In 1954, the newly built Nesconset Highway created a major commercial crossroad in Lake Grove, which prompted the construction of the Smith Haven Mall in 1968. The village was incorporated by a vote of 552 to 332 on September 9, 1968. In 2000, there were 10,250 people, 3,419 households, and 2,742 families residing in the village. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.0 square miles (7.8 km²), all land. Lake Grove is served by three school districts: Sachem Central School District in the northern section, Middle Country Central School district in the middle section, and Smith Village Village in the northeastern section. It is roughly home to roughly half of the town's population.

History

The area of Lake Grove was settled in the early 18th century along Middle Country Road, originally a Native American footpath. The area was variously called Lakeland, Lakeville, New Village, Ronkonkoma or West Middle Island until it settled on the name Lake Grove in mid-19th century. The community's first church building, built in 1818, was the First Congregational Church of New Village. In 1954, the newly built Nesconset Highway created a major commercial crossroad in Lake Grove, which prompted the construction of the Smith Haven Mall in 1968. In order to gain local control of the zoning and planning,Lake Grove was incorporated by a vote of 552 to 332 on September 9, 1968. The next significant housing development built in the area was called Brook Lawn and was located on Stony Brook Road, which later grew into StonyBrook. More developments followed and the population of LakeGro increased rapidly. In 1921, a new post office was erected in the eastern part of the area and given the name of Centereach. In 2002, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. The building has been preserved and is depicted on the village seal. It is located on the eastern side of the lake, near Lake Ronk onkoma, which became a popular area for recreation during the early 20th century and prompted many small summer houses to be built on private roads of the Lake Grove area. In 1998, Lake Grove became a suburb of New York City.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.0 square miles (7.8 km²), all land. The village is located on the Ohio River, which flows through the town. The town has a population of about 2,000. It is the only town in the state of Ohio to have a post office, which opened in 1881. It was the first post office to open in the United States, and was established in 1883. The post office closed in 1891, and the village was not re-opened until 1894, when it was re-established. It has been the site of the town's only post office since 1892, and is now home to a small community of about 1,000 people. It also has a small airport, which is used to transport people to and from the nearby town of O'Hare, Ohio, and to other parts of the state. The community has a history of being active in the community, and has been known to host events such as the Ohio State Fair and the World Series of Poker. The current mayor of the village is a former member of the community's Board of Trustees, and served as its mayor from 1998 to 2002. He was elected to a second term in office in 2010. The city's population is about 2.5,000, and it is located in an area of about 3,000 square miles, or 7.8 kilometers, according to the census.

As of the census of 2000, there were 10,250 people, 3,419 households, and 2,742 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,436.8 people per square mile (1,328.0/ km²) The racial makeup of the village was 91.31% White, 1.44% African American, 0.09% Native American, 4.93% Asian, 1,00% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.84% of the population. The average household size was 2.98 and the average family size was 3.31. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. There were 3,509 housing units at an average density of 1,176.6 per squaremile (454.6/km 2) The median income for a household in theVillage was $67,174, and the median family income was $73,065. The per capita income for the Village was $26,321. About 2.5% of families and 5.1% of residents were below the poverty threshold, including 6.8% of those under age 18 and 3.2% ofThose age 65 or over. The village is located on the U.S. Turnpike, which runs through the town. It is the main route between Chicago and New York City.

Government

As of December 2021, the Mayor of Lake Grove is Robert J. Scottaline, the Deputy Mayor is Richard J. Cohen, and the Village Trustees are Richard J., Richard Kick, John G. Peterson, and Felix Wienclaw. The Village has a population of 2,000. The mayor's office is located on the second floor of the Lake Grove Town Hall. The village is home to a community center, which is open to the public. The town hall is located in the center of the town and has a capacity for 1,000 people. The Mayor's office has a staff of four. Education

Lake Grove is served by three school districts: the Sachem Central School District in the southern section, the Middle Country Central School districts in the middle and northern sections, and the Three Village Central School district in the northeastern section. Lake Grove is home to the Lake Grove High School, which was founded in 1903. The high school is located in the town's southern section. The town is also home to Lake Grove Middle School, a continuation of the original Lake Grove Elementary School. The school was established in 1903 and was the first in Lake Grove to graduate from high school. It is now one of the oldest high schools in the state, with more than 2,000 students in the district. It also has a junior high, high school, and a high school that were all founded in the mid-19th century. It was the site of the first high school to open in the area, which opened in 1924. The current high school opened in the late 1950s, and it is the only one in the county to remain open through the end of the 1960s and early 1970s. It has a total enrollment of about 1,800 students, with the majority of the students living in the south, middle, and northeastern sections of the town. The district also has an elementary and middle school, which were established in the early 1960s. The middle and high school have been open since the 1970s and the high school since the 1980s, with a total population of about 2,200 students.

Lake Grove is home to roughly half of the Smith Haven Mall's property. The mall was built in the early 1990s.
