Lisbon was founded in 1880 by Joseph L. Colton, who named the new city after Lisbon, New York, his wife's hometown, not after Portugal's capital. The Scenic movie theater, established in 1911, is the oldest, continuously running theater in the United States. Pioneer Lisbon newspaper publisher W.D. Boyce is credited with importing the concept for the Boy Scouts from England to the U.S. The city is located at 46°2621N 97°411W (46.439141, 97.683520). The city has a total area of 2.25 square miles (5.83 km²), all land. The population was 2,204 at the 2020 census. The median age in the city was 46.4 years. The racial makeup of the city is 97.0% White, 0.5% African American, 1.2% Asian, and 0.65% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population. It is the county seat of Ransom County, North Dakota, and is located on the North Dakota-Minnesota border. The town has a population of 2,154, with a population density of 957.3 inhabitants per square mile (369.6/km²) The city's population is expected to grow to 2,300 by the end of the decade. It has a climate that is very hot and dry, with an average monthly high of 98.9 degrees Fahrenheit (32.7 degrees Celsius).

History

Lisbon is the primary city name, but also Elliott are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Lisbon, North Dakota. Lisbon was founded in 1880 by Joseph L. Colton, who named the new city after Lisbon, New York, his wife's hometown. The Scenic movie theater is the oldest, continuously running theater in the United States. Camping is available in Sandager Park and five miles south of the city in Dead Colt Creek Recreation Area. Pioneer Lisbon newspaper publisher W.D. Boyce is credited with importing the concept for the Boy Scouts from England to the U.S. The verdant campus of the North Dakota Veterans Home, established in 1891, provides retirement living for military veterans. Construction is underway for a large new facility adjacent to the current one, which is expected to be completed in 2020. Within four years, the town had a newspaper, the Star, and was named after Portugal's capital, Lisbon, not after New York's. Picnickers can often watch canoeists paddle by on the Sheyenne River, which runs through the city's downtown area. The town is home to the Scenic theater, which was established in 1911. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the theater remained open by providing outdoor showings. The city is located on the banks of the Red River, a tributary of the Little Red River that flows into the Missouri River. It is about 50 miles from Bismarck, the state's largest city, and about 30 miles from Grand Forks, the nation's second largest city.

It is located in the eastern part of the state and is located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area. It was founded in the early 1900s by the Spanish-speaking community of the same name. The town was named after the town of Lisbon, which was once the site of the town's first post office.

It is located at the junction of the Arkansas River and the Arkansas Turnpike. The Arkansas River is a tributary of the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the City. The Mississippi River flows through the city and into the Little River River. The Little River is one of the few places in the United States where the Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri rivers all meet. The river is the only one of these rivers that is completely within the state of Arkansas.
