Townville is a borough in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 328 at the 2020 census, up from 323 at the 2010 census. Townville is located in eastern Crawford County at 41°4047N 79°5254W (41.679679, -79.881731). It is surrounded by Steuben Township, a separate municipality. The borough is in a valley at the height of land between north-flowing Muddy Creek and south-flowed Sugar Creek, both tributaries of French Creek and part of the Allegheny River watershed. The lowest elevation is 1,370 ft (420 m) on the southern boundary at the wetland that is drained by Muddy creek and Sugar Creek. The highest elevation is1,500 ft (460 m) on the western boundary of the borough. The median income for a household in the borough was $35,833, and the median income. for a family was $37,500. None of the families and 1.4% of the population were living below the poverty line, including no under eighteens and 3.3% of those over 64. The U.S. Census Bureau says Townville has a total area of 0.51 square miles (1.33 km²), all of which is land. It was founded in 1824 by Noah Town, and named for him. It is located on Pennsylvania Route 408, leading east 8 miles (13 km) to Hydetown and northwest 14 miles (23 km)to Cambridge Springs.

History

Townville was founded in 1824 by Noah Town, and named for him. The town is located on the banks of the Mississippi River. Townville was named for Town, who was a member of the town's first council. Town died in 1825, and the town was named in his honor in 1828. It is now home to the University of South Carolina's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, which was founded by Town in 1823. It was named after Town, whose family moved to the town in 1822. It has a population of about 2,000, and is located in the town of Townville, South Carolina, on the river's banks. The city's name is derived from Town, which means "town" or "village" in English, and means "home" in Spanish. It also means "place" in both Spanish and English, as well as "towns" and "villages" in the Spanish language. Town was named by Town for his son, Noah, who lived there in the early 1800s, and died there in 1829. It's also known as "Townville" by some locals, and "Towntown" for "the town of the same name" by other people. The Townville name is also used for a town in the state of Georgia, which is also named for Noah, and for the town that was once part of the state, "Townsville", and "towntown" in Georgia.

The borough is in a valley at the height of land between north-flowing Muddy Creek and south-flowed Sugar Creek, both tributaries of French Creek. Meadville, the county seat, is 15 miles (24 km) to the west of Townville via PA 408, Lyona Road, and PA 77. According to the United States Census Bureau, Townville has a total area of 0.51 square miles (1.33 km²), all of which is land. The lowest elevation in Townville is 1,370 ft (420 m) on the southern boundary at the wetland that is drained by Muddy creek and Sugar Creek. The highest elevation is 1,500 ft (460 m) on the western boundary of the borough. It is located on the banks of the Allegheny River, which is part of the Pennsylvania-Allegheny River watershed. The town has a population of 1,000 (1,000 people) and is home to the Townville Memorial Hospital, which was built in the 1930s. Townville was the site of the U.S. Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, which took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Townville Post Office was established in 1836. It was the first post office in Pennsylvania.

The borough is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which connects to New Jersey and New Jersey via the Raritan River and the Susquehannock River. It is the only borough in the state to have its own post office, which opened in 1881. The post office is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. It was closed for good in the early 1990s after a fire destroyed the post office. It reopened in the late 1990s, but was closed again in the mid-2000s when the power grid was damaged. It has been closed since then.
