Coplay is a borough in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. It is located six miles (10 km) northwest of Allentown. The borough is part of the Lehigh Valley metropolitan area, which had a population of 861,899 and was the 68th most populous metropolitan area in the U.S. as of the 2020 census. Coplay has one of the highest reported rates of Austrian ancestry in the United States, at 10.6%. The borough seceded from Whitehall Township in 1869 and was incorporated as a borough on April 7, 1869. The Coplay Cement Company Kilns was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The growth of the iron industry attracted immigrants from Ireland. Then, in the early 1900s, the Cement Mills attracted immigrants. from Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and the Ukraine. In the borough, the population was spread out, with 23.0% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% from 65 or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 86.2 males, and for every 100 males there were 83.3 males. Coplay is located at 40°4014N 75°2943W (40.670521, -75.495395) It is located along the Lehigh River, approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) north of Allentown. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²), of which 0.4 square miles is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km²) is water. Coplay is situated along the Lehigh River and is located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The borough is home to a public library, Coplay Public Library, and Coplay High School. It is also home to the Coplay Museum, which is located on the banks of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Institute of Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1875 and is one of the oldest boroughs in the United States. It has a population of 1,000, with the majority of its residents living in the borough of Coplay. It also has a public high school, which was established in 1876. It opened in 1881. It closed in 1883 and was reopened in 1894. In 1894, it was re-opened with the addition of a new high school. History
Coplay was part of the 400 acres (1.6 km²) of land John Jacob Schreiber bought from the William Penn heirs in 1740. The Borough of Coplay seceded from Whitehall Township in 1869 and was incorporated as a borough on April 7, 1869. Coplay became a melting pot of many nationalities. The growth of the iron industry attracted immigrants from Ireland. In the early 1900s, the Cement Mills attracted immigrants. from Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and the Ukraine. The Coplay Cement Company Kilns was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The borough celebrated its centennial anniversary in 1969. A celebration was held from June 1521 in the town. The Pennsylvania Dutch and Germans were initially drawn to agriculture, then to industry. The town is now a suburb of Philadelphia, with a population of around 2,000. It is located on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which was once called the Delaware River. It was the site of the Lehigh Valley Iron Furnaces, which were built in the 1800s and 1900s. It also has a number of other industries, including the Silk Mill, the Cigar Factory, the Knitting Mill, and a Cement Mill. Notable person
Saquon Barkley is a professional football running back. He played for the New York Giants in the NFL. He is the son of former NFL star Elroy Barkley. Barkley is also a member of the Penn State Nittany Lions football team. He was drafted in the third round of the 2014 NFL draft. He also played for Penn State in 2012 and 2013. He has been named to the NFL's all-time greats list, including three first-team All-Pros. His father, Elmer Barkley, was a pro football player in the 1940s and 1950s. His brother, Elroy, is a former NFL player who played in the 1960s and '70s for the Philadelphia Eagles. He died in 2012 at the age of 24, and is buried in Penn State's Alumni Memorial Stadium in East Orange, N.J. He's also been called "one of the best players in the history of Penn State football" and "the best running back in history" by the school's alumnus and coach, Tom Coughlin.
