Lugoff is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Kershaw County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 7,434 at the 2010 census, up from 6,278 at the 2000 census. Lugoff was named for Count Lugoff, a Russian engineer who worked on construction of the Seaboard Air Line Railway in 1899. It is located 5 miles (8 km) southwest of Camden, the Kershaw county seat, and 2.5 miles (4.0 km) west of the Wateree River. The estimated median annual income for a household in the CDP was $56,665, and the median income for the family was $64,148. The CDP has a total area of 15.3 square miles (39.6 km²), of which 15.0 square miles are land and 0.6 square kilometres (0.2 sq mi), or 1.64%, are water. The community is part of the Columbia-South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. It has a population of 9,990 as of the 2020 U.S. census, and a population density of 494.6 people per square mile (190.9/km²) It is home to two public schools: Lugoff-Elgin High School and Elgin Middle School. It also has an elementary school and a middle school, as well as nearby Elgin and Doby's Mill elementary schools. The town has a high school football team.
History
Lugoff was named for Count Lugoff. The Count was a Russian engineer who worked on construction of the Seaboard Air Line Railway in 1899. The railroad had a station in Lugoff, named for the Count. Lugoff was a town in the Russian province of Leningrad. It is now part of the U.S. state of New Jersey. The town of Lugoff has a population of around 2,000. The Lugoff railway station is located in the town. It was built in 1899 and was called Lugoff Station. The station is now known as Lugoff International Airport. It has a station on the New Jersey Turnpike, which opened in 1903. It also has a branch on the Long Island Rail Road, which was opened in 1904. The train station was named Lugoff in honor of the Count, who was an engineer on the railroad's construction. It closed in the 1950s and was replaced by the New York City and Long Island Railroad, which is now called the New England and New Jersey Railroad, or N.E.R. Railroad. The N.H. and N.C. Railroad were both built in the late 1800s and the N.Y. and New England Railroad, respectively, in the 1930s and 1940s. N.J. and NJR were both once owned by the same company, the American National Railway Company (ANR), which was based in New York, New Jersey, and Boston. The name of the station was changed to Lugoff after the Count's death.

The CDP is located in Kershaw County, one of the poorest counties in the U.S., with an average household income of less than $30,000. The town of Lugoff has a population of 1,000, with the majority of its residents living in or near the town of Camden. It is the only CDP in the county that does not have a post office, and the only one in the state with a population over 1,500. The city of Camden is the county seat and the largest city in Kersaw County, with a total population of 2,835. The U.N. World Heritage Site is in Lugoff, South Carolina, at an elevation of 603 meters (1,715 feet) and is located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The state's largest city, Camden, is just over 2 miles (3 km) away, at a height of 605 metres (1.2 km) and has a census-designated place (CDP) of 1.2 square miles (2.4 km).
