Converse is a city in Bexar County, Texas, United States, 15 miles (24 km) northeast of downtown San Antonio. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 27,466. It is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 2017, Converse proposed the annexation of 12 mi2 of territory near Randolph Air Force Base. The additional land would be taken in a series of phased expansions until 2033. Once completed, the area of Converse would triple in size. In 1990 the community, originally settled by German farmers, reportedly had the oldest 4-H Club in Texas. In 2000 the population had grown to 11,508 with 390 businesses. Converse has a total area of 7.1 square miles (18.3 km²), of which 7.0 sq mi (18 km²) are land and 0.077sq mi (0.2km²) is covered by water. The city is bordered by the cities of Live Oak and Universal City to the north, the city of Schertz to the southeast, and theCity of San Antonio and unincorporated parts of B Exar County to the south and west. The Charles W. Anderson Loop highway around San Antonio passes along the eastern edge of ConVERSE, separating it from Randolph Air force Base. It was named for the chief engineer of the Southern Pacific Railroad, a Major Converse, who in 1877 bought a tract of land including the townsite. A post office was established in 1878. In 1896 the town had a saloon, two cotton gins, and a grocery.
History
Converse is on Farm Road 1976 thirteen miles northeast of downtown San Antonio in northeastern Bexar County. It was named for the chief engineer of the Southern Pacific Railroad, a Major Converse, who in 1877 bought a tract of land including the townsite. In 1990 the community had a population of 8,887, and in 1991 it had seventy-three businesses. In 2000 the population had grown to 11,508 with 390 businesses. The community, originally settled by German farmers, reportedly had the oldest 4-H Club in Texas. A singing society, the Salatrillo Liederkranz, had been active for many years. The population in 1946 was 175; by 1965 the town had twenty-two businesses and 900 residents. Over time Converse has become a suburb of San Antonio. The town is located on the Texas-Mexico border and was once part of the U.S. possessions of the Mexican possessions of Texas and Mexico. It is now part of Texas State Park, which is owned by the Texas Rangers and the Texas Department of Game and Fish. The city of Converse was founded in 1878 and was named after a German-born railroad engineer. The name Converse means "converse" or "concrete" in German, and "convers" means "to build" in English. It has been home to a number of charitable organizations, including the Converse Foundation, which was founded by German immigrants in the late 1800s. It also has a chapter of the Knights of Pythias.
Geography
Converse is located in eastern Bexar County. The Charles W. Anderson Loop highway around San Antonio passes along the eastern edge of Converse. Converse is bordered by the cities of Live Oak and Universal City to the north, the city of Schertz to the southeast, and unincorporated parts of B Exar County to the south and west. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Converse has a total area of 7.1 square miles (18.3 km²) of which 7.0 square miles are land and 0.077square miles (0.2 km²), or 1.28%, is covered by water. The city of San Antonio is to the city's south, and to the east and west are the cities Schertz and Live Oak, as well as the town of Universal City. The town of Randolph Air Force Base is to Converse's north, with Randolph Air Base to the west and south. The county seat is San Antonio, which is to its south and east. The state capital is San Marcos, with a population of 2,816. The U.N. World Heritage Site is in Converse, Texas. The Texas Census Bureau estimates the town's population at 2,715. It is also the site of the Texas Diplomatic Institute, which has a consulate in San Antonio, and the Texas Interior Administration and the Texas National Guard Post.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 27,466 people, 8,435 households, and 6,176 families residing in the city. The average household size was 2.94 and the average family size was 3.26.
