Tomball is a city in Harris County in the U.S. state of Texas. In 1907, the community of Peck was renamed Tomball for local congressman Thomas Henry Ball, who had a major role in the development of the Port of Houston. Tomball is located at 30°556N 95°378W (30.098905, 95.618899). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.9 square miles (30.9 km²) Of the city's 11,778 population, 14.3% of persons were at or below the poverty line in 2019. The city is part of the Houston metropolitan area, which is home to more than 1.5 million people. The Tomball Oil Field was discovered in 1933. By 1935, 2,750,000 barrels of oil had been produced from 200 wells. The discovery produced an oil boom with many oil companies subsequently showing interest in the area. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. The Köppen Climate Classification system, Tomball has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps, on the climate maps. It has a population of 12,341, according to the 2020 United States census. The racial and ethnic makeup of the city was 60.8% non-Hispanic white, 9.0% Black or African American, 0.1% American Indian or Alaska Native, 1.7% Asian, 1,0% multiracial, and 29.5% Hispanic or Latin American of any race.
History
Tomball is the primary city name, but also The Woodlands are acceptable city names or spellings, Rose Hill on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Tomball, Texas. Settlement began in the Tomball area in the early 19th century. It was on a land granted in 1838 to William Hurd's heirs. In 1906 the area began to boom. Tomball incorporated in 1933. By 1935, 2,750,000 barrels of oil had been produced from 200 wells. Humble Oil Company, struck a deal with the town through which they would provide water and natural gas free of charge to the residents in exchange for rights to drill on the land. This agreement lasted until 1988. The Tomball Oil Field was discovered on 27 May 1933. Production was from the Cockfield Formation at a depth of about 5,000 feet (1,500 m) The discovery produced an oil boom with many oil companies subsequently showing interest in the area. Because of the 1933 incorporation, Houston did not incorporate Tomball's territory into its city limits. The town was officially named Tom Ball, later to be shortened to one word, for Mr. Ball, on December 2, 1907. It is located on the Texas-Mexico border and was once known as "Peck" because of a chief civil engineer of the railroad line. It has a population of about 3,000 people and is located near Galveston, Texas. The city is now home to the University of Texas at Galvest on the Gulf of Mexico campus, which was founded in 1879. It also hosts the Texas Museum of Natural History, a museum dedicated to the history of Texas.

The school is one of the oldest in the state, having been founded in 1855. The Tomball high school football team was established in the 1950s. It was the first high school to win a state championship in the United Southeastern Cadillacs Division. It is also the only high school that won a state title in the 1960s and 1970s, and the only one to do so in the last two decades. The high school's football team won the state championship twice in the 1970s and 1980s, the second time in the latter decade. The football team also won the national championship in 1989 and 1990, the third and fourth years of the 2000s.

Education
Pupils who live in Tomball attend schools in the Tomball Independent School District. The district contains eleven elementary schools (Tomball, Decker Prairie, Lakewood, Timber Creek, Creekside Forest, Creekview, Canyon Pointe, Willow Creek, Wildwood, Grand Oakes and Rosehill Elementary Schools) There are also three intermediate schools (Northpointe, Tomball Intermediate, and Oakcrest Intermedciate) Tomball is a member of the Lone Star College System. Tomball ISD earned an overall "A" rating in the 2018-2019 accountability ratings for school districts across the state. In 2018, Dr. Jeffery Potts joined CCS as Head of School. Dr. Potts was on the news for creating a School Marshall Program, where he armed teachers with guns at his previous school. The Tomball College branch of the Harris County Public Library is a joint project between the college and HCPL. The territory in Tomballs joined the community college district in 1982. Tomballs is home to the Tomballs High School and Tomball Memorial High School, as well as the Connections Academy which includes the 18+ program. The school district also has a private school called Concordia Lutheran High School (912) which was established in 1982 and has over 650 students. It is a part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and is a Pre-K8 Catholic school. It was originally held at St. Anne Church but moved to its current location in 1984.
Government and infrastructure
The North Harris County Regional Water Authority form by State legislation as a taxing entity, which is located in Voting District No. 2. Harris County Housing Authority (HCHA) operates The Retreat at Westlock, a public housing complex for seniors, in an unincorporated area away from the Tomball city limits. The Harris Health System (formerly Harris County Hospital District) designated the Acres Homes Health Center for the ZIP code 77375. The designated public hospital is Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital in northeast Houston. The U.S. Postal Service operates a Tomball Post Office at 122 N Holderrieth Blvd. The Tomball City Council voted down a proposal to make English the official language of the city on September 7, 2010, and it voted down a measure that would have forbidden undocumented immigrants from owning and/or renting property and operating and/ or owning businesses. Tomball has its own water supply, however it does not provide water services to Tomball, but does provide water service to other parts of Harris County. The city is home to one of the few autogyros in the world, which can fly in 40-knot (74 km/h; 46 mph) crosswinds. It costs much less than a helicopter to buy ($75,000) and operate ($50/hour) and has 140 units. It began taking occupants in May 2017, and completion was scheduled by fall 2017. It has 166,762 square feet (15,492.7 m2) of space, and may be aged 65 or older.
Healthcare
The city is served by Tomball Regional Medical Center, located at 605 Holderrieth Boulevard. It is a full-service 357-bed facility hospital providing special expertise in cardiovascular disease, cancer care, emergency services, digital diagnostic imaging, physical rehabilitation, sports medicine, and comprehensive wound and lymphedema care. The hospital is owned by HCA Healthcare Inc. The city is also served by the Tomball High School football team, which won the state championship in 2010. The school's football team finished second in the state in the 2010-11 season. The team also won the national championship in the 2009-10 season. It was the first time the city had won back-to-back state titles in the history of the state. The last time was in the 1970s and 1980s, when the city was in its second place in the U.S. state. It has won three state championships in the last five years. The most recent came in the 2008-09 season. Tomball is home to the University of Texas at Galveston, which has won two state championships. The university has also won two national titles in its history, in the 1980s and the 1990s. The town has a population of 3,000. The state has been in its current position for more than 50 years, the longest in the United States since the mid-1980s, and the longest since the early 1900s. It also has the highest percentage of residents of any city in Texas.
Transportation
David Wayne Hooks Memorial Airport, a general aviation airport, is located outside of the Tomball city limits in northwest Harris County. On June 27, 2007, the Texas State Legislature approved Tomball's request to annex Hooks Airport even though the airport does not border the city limits. Since the airport is in the city of Houston's extraterritorial jurisdiction, the city had to get permission from Houston to annex the airport. Tomball is primarily served by FM 2920 (Main Street) east to west and State Highway 249 (Tomball Parkway) north to south. The city of Tomball has a population of 2,000. The airport is located in the northwest part of Harris County, near the town of Conroe. It is the only airport in Harris County that is not in the Houston metropolitan area. It was built in the 1950s and is located near the city's downtown area. The Tomball Airport Authority was formed in the 1970s to handle the airport's growth. It has been in operation since the 1980s and has a fleet of more than 1,000 aircraft. It also serves as a hub for Houston-area airliners, including United Airlines and Southwest Airlines.
