Patterson is a town in Putnam County, New York, United States. The population was 11,541 at the 2020 census. The town was first settled around 1720 in The Oblong, which was a disputed area in southeastern Province of New York also claimed by the Connecticut Colony. The reason Patterson was spelled with two "t"s was due to the looseness with which early farmer Matthew Paterson spelled his own last name. The northern town line is the border of Dutchess County and the eastern town boundary is theborder of Connecticut. Elizabeth Montgomery owned a summer estate in Patterson, which is now part of Wonder Lake State Park. Henry Ludington - local resident, father of Sybil Ludington, was a Revolutionary War Hero. Pete Seeger - musician, aunt of actress Elizabeth Montgomery, lived in Patterson for many summer seasons until her death in 1995. The first village in Patterson was originally called Frederickstown. The eastern part of the future Putnam county was called Southeast Precinct (not the same as the current town of Southeast). The Philipses were Loyalists during the Revolution and left the area. The state confiscated their land, selling it off. In 1788, the former Philipse portion of the Oblong was chartered as the Town of Southeast; the remainder of the region wasChartered as Town of Fredericktown in DutChess County,New York. The remnant of the town was renamed as theTown of Kent in 1817; it was renamed Patterson in 1808.

The eastern part of the future Putnam County was called Southeast Precinct (not the same as the current town of Southeast) In 1788, the former Philipse portion of the Oblong was chartered as the Town of Southeast. In 1795, Fredericktown township was split into four parts: 1. Town of Carmel, 2. The Town of Franklin, and 3. The towns of Patterson and Kent. It was renamed as the towns of Kent in 1817 and Patterson in 1808. The town of Patterson was originally called Frederickstown. The first village in putnam County, the hamlet of Patterson, was originally known as Frederickstown, and the town of Fredericktown was renamed Frederickstown in 1795. The name of the town was changed to Patterson in 1708. It is now called Putnam, after the town where the first village was located. The current town was founded in 1788 and is located in Dutchess County, New York. It has a population of about 2,000 people. The population of Putnam is about 3,000. Transportation

State Route 22 runs through every town on the East side of Putnam County, and runs directly through the Business District of Patterson. I-84 passes in the southwest and houses Exit 18 for Route 311. Metro-North Railroad has rail commuter rail service to New York City via the Harlem Line, with the Patterson train station in the town center. State Route 22 and Route 311 are the main roads through Patterson. The town is also home to the New York State Museum, which is located in the center of the town.
