Elkview is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,222 at the 2010 census. It is named after the Elk River, which flows into the Kanawra River. Herbert Hoover High School was named in honor of former U.S. President Herbert Hoover. The school was located in Clendenin, a few miles north of Elkview, prior to its extensive flood damage in 2016.Corey Bird, baseball player for the West Virginia Mountaineers, was born in Elkview and grew up in the town. The town is located at 38°2616N 81°2855W (38.437810, -81.482007), twelve miles east of Charleston. According to the United States Census Bureau, the Elkview CDP has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.6 km²), of which 1.7 square miles of it is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km²) is water. The community's age distribution is 20.0% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The town has a population of 1,816. The Elkview area is the largest in the state by land area. It is the second largest CDP in South Carolina after Charleston, with 1,715. The area is home to the South Carolina College of Arts and Sciences, which has a campus in Elkview. It also has the University of South Carolina's College of Business and Economics, which is located in the town's central business district. The community is also home to South Carolina State University, which was founded in 1876. It was the first state college in the United States to be chartered in 1875. The state's first hospital was built in 1881. The city's population was 1,632 in 1883. It has a current population of 2,814. The U.N. World Heritage Site is in Elk View, South Carolina. The CDP is the only one in the South to have been designated a World HeritageSite in the World Heritage Area.
