Matthews is a town in southeastern Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, United States. It is a suburb of Charlotte. The population was 27,198 according to the 2010 Census. In the early 19th century, the new settlement that would become Matthews was unofficially named Stumptown for the copious amount of tree stumps left from making way for cotton farms. The community's name later changed to Fullwood, named after appointed area postmaster John Miles Fullwood. The town was incorporated into a municipal corporation in 1879, and was renamed Matthews in honor of Edward Matthews, who was director of the Central Carolina Railroad, which would later become known as the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. Matthews is home to a professional soccer club and is named after the Town Town Athletic Club, which was founded in 2019. It was founded by a group of former members of the U.S. Army National Guard, who moved to the area in the early 20th century to escape the Civil War. It has a total area of 17.2 square miles (45 km²), all of which is land. The racial makeup of the town was 82.3% White, 10.1% African American or Black, 3.7% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.8% from two or more races, and 4.3%. It was founded in 1874 as Fullwood. The town was incorporated into a municipal corporation in 1879. It is named after Edward Matthews, who was director of the Central Carolina Railroad, which would later become known as the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. It has a population of 1,000. The community was once known as Stumptown for the copious amount of tree stumps left from making way for cotton farms. The first train arrived on December 15, 1874, and Fullwood acted as a stagecoach stop between Charlotte and Monroe. It became Matthews in honor of Edward Matthews after he was appointed postmaster of the area. The name was changed to Fullwood after the appointed area postmaster John Miles Fullwood, named after the area's first postmaster, who died in 1875. The city was incorporated as a town on January 1, 1879, and was named Matthews on January 2, 1881. The town's population was 1,200 on January 3, 1883, and 1,500 on January 4, 1885. It had a population peak of 2,000 on January 6, 1887. It reached its peak of 3,000 in 1891, and 3,100 on January 7, 1891. It suffered a population decline on January 9, 1892, and a population increase on January 10, 1894, when the town was reduced to 1,100.
