Upper Sandusky is a city and the county seat of Wyandot County, Ohio, United States, along the upper Sandusky River. The city is approximately 59 mi (96 km) south of Toledo and 62 mi (99 km) north of Columbus. The population was 6,596 at the 2010 census. It was named "Upper" because it is located near the headwaters of the Sandusky river. It is located at 40°4947N 83°1645W (40.829608, -83.279102).According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.19 square miles (18.62 km²), of which 7.01 square miles of it is land and 0.18 sq miles (0.47 km²) is water. In 1843, a new town of Upper Sandusky was platted nearby the forcibly abandoned Wyandots village of the same name. The first building in town was the county jail in 1846, and it was designated as the seat of the county in 1848. It became the site of Fort Feree (or Ferree) in late 1812 by Pennsylvania militia led by Lieutenant Colonel Joel Ferree, by order of General William Henry Harrison. A small community of free Black people also lived in the old village. In September 1783, a number of Native Americans formed the Western Confederacy, a confederation intended to resist U.S. expansion into the Northwest Territory. The Northwest Indian War followed.

History

Upper Sandusky was a 19th-century Wyandot town named for its location at the headwaters of the Sandusky River in northwestern Ohio. The town and the surrounding settlements, like Captain Pipe's Town, were closely allied with the British at Fort Detroit. During the Crawford expedition of 1782, Pennsylvania militiamen sought to destroy the town, but were defeated en route. After the war, a number of Native Americans met at Upper Sandusky and formed the Western Confederacy, a confederation intended to resist U.S. expansion into the Northwest Territory. In the War of 1812, the village became the site of Fort Feree (or Ferree) on a bluff over looking the flood plain of theSandusky River. The Fort was built in late 1812 by Pennsylvania militia led by Lieutenant Colonel Joel Ferree, by order of General William Henry Harrison. The first building in town was the county jail in 1846. It was designated as the seat of Wyandotte County in 1848. A small community of free Black people also lived in the old village. A new town was platted nearby the forcibly abandoned Wy andot village in 1843 and the first colonizer's house wasBuilt in 1845. It became part of the WyandOT Grand Reserve in the Upper Sanduchi River area created by the Treaty of Fort Meigs in 1817. Prior to that, it was in northwesternOhio Indian country above the Greenville Treaty line of 1795.

The city is located on the Ohio River, which is a tributary of the Sandusky River. The town of Upper Sandusky has a population of 2,816. It is the only city in the state of Ohio to be named after a former president of the United States, George H.W. Bush, who died in office on January 20, 1969. The state's capital is Sandusky, which was founded in 1836. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located in the town of Sandusky and was declared a World War II Memorial in 1973. It was named after U. S. President Abraham Lincoln, who was born in 1828 and died in 1839. The Ohio River runs through the city, and the town's name is derived from the word "sandusky" which means "sand" or "sandstone" in English. It also means "sandy" in Italian. The village's name means "dewey" and "sandwich" in Spanish. It has been known as "Sandusky" since the 19th century, when it was first settled.

The city has a lending library, the UpperSandusky Community Library. The school district also operates a middle school and a high school. The district is a part of the Ohio Department of Education. It is one of the few districts in the state not to be required to use the state's public school system for all students. It also has a private school, a middle and high school, as well as a charter school. It has three elementary and one middle schools. The high school has one middle and one high school and one charter school, which is also open to the public. There is also a community lending library in the city. It was established by the city in the 1970s. The library is open to all residents of the city, except those who live outside the city limits. It opened in the 1990s and has since been expanded to serve the city's surrounding areas. It closed in the 2000s and is no longer open to non-residents of the City of Sandusky, Ohio. It reopened in the 2010s and now has a new library, which serves the city and surrounding communities.
