Seligman (Havasupai: Thavgyalyal) is a census-designated place (CDP) on the northern border of Yavapai County, in northwestern Arizona, United States. The population was 456 at the 2000 census. Seligman is a popular stopping point along Historic U.S. Route 66. The town was on the original Route 66 from 1926 through 1978, when Interstate 40 bypassed it a few miles south. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 1, 2005, reference #0400-0511. The historic district is along historic Route 66 in town, which was designated a historic highway by the state of Arizona in 1978. The "Havasu Harvey House" was a Fred Harvey Company Harvey House hotel and restaurant, serving the Santa Fe Railway and local residents. It opened in 1905, closed in 1954, and was demolished in 2008. The former Santa Fe Reading room is now located at the Selig man High School. The city is located at 35°1942N 112°5227W (35.328199, 112.874303), at 5,240 feet (1,600 m) in elevation, alongside the Big Chino Wash, in a northern section of Chino Valley. The region was in the longtime homeland of the Havas upai people, who had a settlement in the present day SeligMan area. In 1987 Selgman gained its name "Birthplace of Route 66" due to the State of Arizona to dedicate a stretch of the historic highway.

Geography

Seligman is located at 35°1942N 112°5227W (35.328199, 112.874303), at 5,240 feet (1,600 m) in elevation, alongside the Big Chino Wash, in a northern section of Chino Valley. The wash is a major tributary of the Verde River. The Seligman CDP has a total area of 6.4 square miles (17 km²), all land. It is a popular stopping point along Historic U.S. Route 66. The town has a population of about 2,000. The CDP is located in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, which is part of the Yavapai County, Arizona, region. The community is home to a small community college, Seligmen High School, and a community center. The city is located on the banks of the Chino River, which flows through the town to the Arizona/Sonora border. It has an elevation of 1,600 feet (400 m) and is located near the junction of two major rivers, the Verdes River and the Chinos River. It also has a number of small streams, including the Little Chino Creek, which runs through the center of the town. The village has a post office, with a ZIP code of 7054. It was founded in 1881. The post office closed in the early 1900s, but reopened in the mid-20th century.

History

Seligman was on the original U.S. Route 66 from 1926 through 1978, when Interstate 40 bypassed it a few miles south. The Seligman Commercial Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The historic district is along historic Route 66 in town, which was designated a historic highway by the state of Arizona in 1978. The town is the first stop heading west on the longest uninterrupted stretch of Route 66, running around 160 miles (260 km) to Topock on the east side of the Colorado River. In 1987 Selig man gained its name "Birthplace of Historic Route 66" due to the efforts of SeligMan residents, who convinced the State of Arizona to dedicate Route 66 ahistoric highway. The first sign recognizing this designation was posted in Springfield, Missouri on April 30, 1926, and it took over a decade to pave the full route in its entirety. The city was once home to the Havasupai people, who had a settlement in the present day Seligmen area. The region was in the longtime homeland of the Hav asupai, and the town site was on Beale's Wagon Road, and a stage stop on the Mojave Road. In 1886, the town was renamed after Jesse Seligmann, one of the founders of J. & W. Selgman & Co. of New York, who helped finance the railroad lines in the area. It was also a terminal point for changing train crews between Winslow and Needles, who used overnight cottages.

As of the census of 2000, there were 456 people, 205 households, and 121 families residing in the CDP. The population was 85% White, with 2% Native American, 2% Asian, 1% Pacific Islander, 6% from other races, and 5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 19% of the population. The median income for a household in theCDP was US$23,833, and the median incomes for a family were US$29,722. About 14% of families and 17% of people were below the poverty line. The CDP is located on the U.S. Census Bureau's West Virginia-New Hampshire border. It is the only CDP in the state to have a post office with more than one ZIP code. The town has a population density of 71.5/sq mi (27.6/km²), with 281 housing units at an average density of 44.0/ sq mi (17.0-km²) The town is located near the junction of the West Virginia Turnpike and the New Hampshire Turnpikes. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The city's name is derived from the word "bulge" or "bullet" which means "to blow" or to "blow up" in a huge explosion. The name is also used to refer to a nearby mountain range.

Education

The basketball team won the 1-A state championship in 2006 after consecutive second-round exits in the tournament in the two previous years. As well, its baseball team has lost in the final game of the state championship for three straight years. The school's colors are red, white, and black, and its teams are called the Antelopes. It is located in the Seligman Unified School District, which also includes West Valley High School and West Valley Junior/Senior High School. The district's mascot is the "Antelopes" and the school colors are white, red and black. It also has a baseball team called the "Bulls" and a football team called "The Bulls" The school is part of the West Valley School District and is located near the town of West Valley, California. It has a population of about 2,000 students, mostly middle school students and high school students. It was founded in the 1950s and has been in the same district since the 1960s. The high school is located on the west side of the city. It's in the district's largest suburb, West Valley City. Its mascot is "The Antelope," which means "bulls" or "bull" in Spanish. Its football team is known as "The Bulls" and its football team as "the Bulls" is known for its success in the state tournament. The football team has won the state title three times in a row, the last two years in the finals.

In popular culture

The town of Radiator Springs in the Pixar film Cars is loosely based on Seligman. While researching the history of Route 66, Lasseter met Angel Delgadillo, who told him how traffic through the town virtually disappeared on the day that nearby Interstate 40 opened.Delgadillos' brother Juan opened the Snow Cap Drive-In in 1953; the eatery has since become a famous roadside attraction. Author, Route 66 historian and Cars voice actor Michael Wallis covers the history at the restaurant in his book Route 66: The Mother Road. The book is published by Simon & Schuster and is available in hardback for $24.99.

Climate

According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Sunset Crater has a cold semi-arid climate, abbreviated "BSk" on climate maps. The climate is cold and dry, with high temperatures and low lows. The area has a high degree of humidity, with the highest levels in the southern part of the crater. The temperature is low to medium-high, with low humidity and high temperatures in the northern parts of the crater. It has a low level of precipitation, with most of the precipitation falling in the form of snow and ice. The crater has a temperature of between -30 and -40 degrees Fahrenheit. It is one of the coldest places in the U.S. in terms of water vapor. It also has the lowest levels of carbon dioxide in the United States, at about 1.5 °C. It was the site of the first human settlement in the area, in the 17th century, and has been home to a number of other settlements since.
