Farmington is a city in Davis County, Utah, United States. The population was 24,531 at the 2020 census. Lagoon Amusement Park and Station Park transit-oriented retail center (which includes a FrontRunner train station) are located in Farmington. It was the birthplace of one of the longest-lived Latter-day Saint apostles, LeGrand Richards. The city was ranked 12th on Money magazine's "Best Places to Live" index in 2011. In the 2010 census there were 18,275 people, 5,148 households, and 2,769 families residing in the city. Farmington is located in east-central Davis County. It is bordered by Kaysville and Fruit Heights to the north and by Centerville to the south. The Wasatch Mountains are to the east, and the Great Salt Lake is to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.0 square miles (25.8 km²), of which 9.8 square miles [25.5 km²] is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km²) is water. Under the Köppen climate classification, Farmington experiences what may be classified as a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Csa), despite not being on the west coast of an ocean like most Mediterranean climates. It may also beclassified as humid continental (Dsa), if the boundary between continental and subtropical climate is an average January temperature of 0 °C (32 °F) rather than 3 °F (27 °F).

History

The region that is now Farmington was settled in 1847 by the Haight family. It was the birthplace of one of the longest-lived Latter-day Saint apostles, LeGrand Richards. Lagoon Amusement Park was founded here in 1886 and occupies 100 acres (0.40 km²) of the city. The city was ranked 12th on Money magazine's "Best Places to Live" index in 2011.

Geography and climate

Farmington is located in east-central Davis County. It is bordered by Kaysville and Fruit Heights to the north and by Centerville to the south. The Wasatch Mountains are to the east, and the Great Salt Lake is to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.0 square miles (25.8 km²) It has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Csa), despite not being on the west coast of an ocean like most Mediterranean climates. Lake-enhanced snowfall occurs frequently during the winter, and cool downslope mountain breezes occur on most summer evenings. It may also be classified as humid continental (Dsa), if the boundary between continental and subtropical climate is an average January temperature of 0 °C (32 °F) rather than 3 °F (27 °F). The city is located on the Utah-Utah Turnpike, which runs north-south through the Wasatch Mountain Range and into the Salt Lake Valley. It has an average monthly temperature of 3 °C. The city's average annual rainfall is 1.7 inches (38.5 mm) and it has a mean annual rainfall of 0.8 inches (1.2 cm) Farmington has a humid continental climate (DSA) with an average annual temperature of 1.8 °C, or 0.7 °F. It also has a cool summer summertime climate (Csb) with average monthly temperatures of 2.7°C (4.7 °F).

Demographics

In an 1850 census of Davis County, almost half of the Farmington residents were from New York.:39 In the 2010 census there were 18,275 people, 5,148 households, and 2,769 families residing in the city with an average family size of 3.41. It is part of the OgdenClearfield, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. In the city, the population was spread out, with 37.0% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 19.0%. The median age was 26 years. For every 100 females, there were 109.2 males. The per capita income for the city was $24,407. About 1.6% of families and 2.4%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.1%. of those under age 18 and 0.2% of those age 65 or over. The median income for a family was $78,492. Males had a median income of $56,847 versus $30,464 for females. The average household size was 3.72 and theAverage family size was3.97. The city has a population density of 1,557.8 people per square mile (601.1/km²). There were 5,339 housing units at an average density of 414.7 per squaremile (160.0/km 2). The racial makeup of the city is 95.1%, with 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American,0.9% Asian, 1.3%. Pacific Islander, and 1.8% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.98%.

Education

The community is served by Davis School District. Davis is located in the eastern part of the county. The community is home to the Davis High School and the Davis Junior/Senior High School. It is also home to Davis Elementary School and Davis Middle School. The town has a population of about 2,000 people, most of whom live in the north and west areas of the community. The school district serves about 1,000 students. It was founded in 1872 and is located on the banks of the Davis River. The district's mascot is the Dukes of Hazzard and the school colors are blue and white. It also has a baseball team, the Davis Mustangs, and a softball team, The Dukes Of Hazzards, who play in the Davis-Davis High School football team. It has a golf team, Davis High, and Davis Elementary, both of which are in the district. The village also has an elementary school and a middle school, which are served by the Davis Community School District, which serves the community in the east and west parts of the town, respectively. The city has a high school, Davis Junior & Senior High School, which was established in 1876. It's also the home of Davis Elementary and Davis Junior High, which opened in 1878. The Davis Community High School is in the community, and the community has a junior/senior high, Davis-Hazzard High School in the west, which began in 1881.

S&S Shortline Railroad Park & Museum

S&S Shortline Railroad Park & Museum contains over 90 pieces of equipment in all shapes and sizes. It also has two separate railroads where visitors can enjoy train rides on the first Saturday of every month from June to September. The track gauges of the two railroads are 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge and 7+12 in (190.5 mm) gauge. One interesting item in the park's collection is a 4-4-0 steam locomotive built by Crown Metal Products. The park is located in the town of Farmington, New Hampshire, and is open to the public on the weekends and on weekdays.

Trail system

The Farmington Trail Committee maintains 146.49 miles of trail throughout the city. 36 of the trails are named that traverse from the hills on the east to the wetlands to the west. The trail system has a variety of surface material including gravel, asphalt, and concrete. There are 55 points of interest that are accessible by the trail system. The trails are maintained by a volunteer group called the Farmington trail committee. The committee is made up of members from Farmington and surrounding communities. The group meets monthly to discuss plans for the future of the city's trails.
